H&M Retreats — Hermann, United States
Lakeside retreat center south of Hermann, Missouri, for intentional rest and renewal.
In 2017, a group of friends gathered at a lake house for their first annual marriage retreat—simple, intentional conversations and time with people invested in each other's wellbeing. That gathering sparked a larger vision. By August 2019, that dream had taken institutional form: H&M Christian Retreats Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, received a significant financial and land donation from the Harvey and Melba Khale Trust. The acronym H&M honors the Khales' generosity. Over the following months, the organization developed a retreat location south of Hermann, Missouri, on scenic Highway 19.
The philosophy at H&M Retreats centers on a distinction between vacation and intentional rest. Most vacations leave people exhausted upon return. H&M aims to provide an environment with minimal distractions—a place where individuals and groups can unplug from routine and focus on what truly matters. The organization serves individuals, couples, ministry teams, and other groups seeking refreshment, whether for marriages, families, work teams, or personal renewal.
The physical plant includes four beautifully modern lakeside cabins, each sleeping up to six guests with two queen and two twin beds, plus a retreat house with a guest suite featuring its own full kitchen and bathroom, alongside shared meeting space. Glamp tents are available by request in spring and fall. The property includes a lake for fishing, woods for hiking, and fire pits for evening reflection. Intentionally, permanent internet is not installed in cabins—available only by request—and cell signal is deliberately limited. This design choice reflects the center's commitment to helping guests step away from digital distraction and be present with those around them.
H&M Retreats operates as a nonprofit with a sponsorship fund to ensure accessibility. The organization welcomes both its own facilitated retreats throughout the year and hosted retreats led by outside facilitators. The land itself supports a cattle operation, which provides necessary revenue while the center works toward financial sustainability.
